It’s been five years since Puerto Rican indie duo Buscabulla released their debut album Regresa, and now they’re ready to return with something even more personal. Today, the duo — Raquel Berrios and Luis Alfredo Del Valle — announced their second full-length album, Se Amaba Así, out June 13 via Domino. Along with the announcement, they’ve dropped the lead single, “El Camino.”
A dramatic, disco-tinged guitar track, “El Camino” sets the tone for what Berrios calls “the movie that is our new record.” She explains: “It’s about coming to a crossroads in a relationship and getting lost traveling through the uncharted, dark territories of life.” That cinematic atmosphere flows through the single, which blends retro influences with Buscabulla’s signature dreamy, tropical sound.
Se Amaba Así turns the lens inward. “We took the decided approach to turn inward, to ourselves, and explore the struggles of not only our own romantic relationship but romantic relationships in general,” says Berrios. The album navigates themes of love, conflict, and catharsis, wrestling with traditional and modern ideas of intimacy, all while pulling from Latin and tropical genres of the past and reimagining them in a contemporary context.
