Richard Green – “Wasted Tears”

Richard Green has never seemed particularly interested in staying in one musical lane. His work moves between electronic music, indie, ambient, funk and pop, and “Wasted Tears” is another example of that restless creative instinct. Released in January 2026, the track takes the familiar territory of emotional regret and turns it into something darker, melodic and ultimately reflective.

At its heart, “Wasted Tears” is about those moments when we give too much emotional energy to something that, with hindsight, simply wasn’t worth it. It is an experience most people recognise, particularly when looking back at the difference between how we understand life when we’re young and how we see it once we’ve gained some perspective.

What makes the concept interesting is that Green isn’t approaching it as a criticism of youthful mistakes. Instead, he sees those experiences as part of growing up. Sometimes you have to care too much, hurt too deeply and shed a few “wasted tears” before you learn what deserves your energy. That gives the track an emotional maturity without making it feel overly heavy.

Musically, Green places that idea inside an indie/dance framework built around a strong lead melody and a darker atmosphere. The contrast is important. The production has an underlying sense of shadow, but the melodic writing keeps pulling the song toward something more accessible and emotionally immediate.

Green also describes the sounds and arrangement as some of his most original work to date. Everything on the track was created by him, from his home studio in Piacenza, near Milan, before mixing and mastering at Studio Elfo. There is something fitting about that independent approach given how personal the song’s central idea is.

His influences are equally varied. Elements of The Chemical Brothers, Boys Noize and John Frusciante’s experimental electronic work can be found somewhere within the wider palette, but Green isn’t trying to reproduce any of them. Instead, he takes inspiration from different corners of electronic and melodic music and filters them through his own approach.

“Wasted Tears” also sits within Electronic Therapy, a six-track EP that moves between techno, electro, indie and EDM. It is another reminder that versatility is one of Green’s defining characteristics. Even as he develops his more electronic work, he continues exploring entirely different directions, including funk/pop and forthcoming chillout and ambient material.

What stays consistent is his interest in melody and atmosphere. “Wasted Tears” may be rooted in an experience of regret, but it ultimately feels more like a song about perspective. The tears may have been wasted, but the experience wasn’t necessarily pointless.

Sometimes growing up means learning what was worth crying over—and what wasn’t.
