North East England’s electro powerhouse MARQelectronica is back with a bold new release, My Table—a moody, genre-blending single that fuses emotional storytelling with an urban sonic edge. Featuring an intense collaboration with rising rapper Josh, the track explores themes of heartbreak, independence, and emotional strength.
Departing slightly from MARQelectronica’s typically upbeat, club-friendly sound, My Table ventures into deeper emotional territory. The song is built on intricate drill and trap-inspired beats, moody synth lines, and a dirty, pulsating bass that sets the tone for its introspective narrative. The single blends MARQ’s signature smooth, soulful vocals with Josh’s raw and reflective rap verses, creating a powerful contrast that reflects the dual perspectives of a shared emotional experience.
“This song is a slight departure into a more moody urban soundscape,” MARQ explains. “The rapper Josh had been through a rough breakup, and I was recalling a rough breakup when I wrote this, so the song was a kind of therapy for both of us.” The result is a strikingly honest and layered piece that captures the emotional weight of heartbreak without losing its laid-back, groove-laden attitude.
My Table tackles the story of an ex-partner returning unexpectedly—perhaps seeking reconciliation—only to face a stronger, more self-assured version of the person they once knew. “It’s all about an ex coming back and expecting you to welcome them with open arms,” MARQ says, “but they get more than they bargained for.”
Sonically, My Table is described as a “dark, moody mix of drill trap, smooth vocals, and rap with attitude,” showcasing a more experimental side of MARQelectronica’s ever-evolving style. “It’s a conscious exploration into a darker sound with more jarring percussion, moody synth, and dirty bass,” he adds. “We had a blast making the video with our friends and knew this was a track that we really both identified with. Hopefully, other people will get the message of strength and independence after the damage someone caused.”
This collaboration marks a significant milestone for both artists. MARQelectronica, known for his polished, high-energy live performances and genre-crossing style, first emerged as the vocalist and lyricist for the Newcastle-based metal-step/synth-wave band Sapien Trace. Since launching his solo career during the COVID-19 lockdown, he has released an impressive catalogue of 23 tracks, including two EPs on Buzzin’ Records. He has worked with acclaimed artists such as trip-hop collective The Last of the Fallen Angels, Harbour Master Productions, and Brit and Ivor Novello winner Simon Ellis, who mixed and mastered some of MARQ’s earlier work. His album Savage Times and several EPs are even available in physical stores like HMV Newcastle and Beyond Vinyl—an increasingly rare feat in today’s digital music era.
Meanwhile, Josh brings his own compelling story to the track. “My Table is all about a toxic relationship I was in and how I felt at the time of the breakup,” he shares. “As I’ve got older, I’ve realised how music helped me, so I chose to write about the troubles I’ve been through in my life—and other people seem to really relate to it.” Hailing from Newcastle and already making waves on the local music scene with performances at major events like the Great North Run and regional festivals, Josh is clearly an artist to watch heading into 2025.
Together, MARQelectronica and Josh have created a track that is as emotionally charged as it is sonically adventurous. My Table stands out not only as a powerful story of resilience but also as a testament to the creative possibilities that emerge when two artists bring their personal truths into the studio.
