As Within So Without by Seann Medicina — A Soulful Journey Through Sound and Spirit

In a world that rarely slows down, Seann Medicina’s debut EP, As Within So Without, offers a much-needed pause — a sonic reflection of healing, community, and spiritual awakening. Released with the quiet strength of someone who’s lived through transformation, this collection of songs blends North American folk and rock roots with the earthy, sacred rhythms of South American ceremonial music, creating an immersive listening experience that feels both ancient and new.

The story behind As Within So Without is as meaningful as the music itself. After spending several years immersed in the Peruvian jungle, Seann Medicina embarked on a personal healing journey that would deeply shape his musical path. Exposed to native ikaros and South American rhythms, his creative voice began to awaken—not through commercial ambition, but as a spiritual calling.

These songs are not just tracks. They are expressions of transformation, grounded in gratitude and connection, and intended as offerings of healing. As Seann himself puts it, “Music isn’t just a hobby anymore. It is part of my DNA and artistic expression helps the soul to breathe with life.”

What makes this EP especially compelling is the organic, collaborative spirit behind it. Seann’s neighbor, Paul Mitchell, played a pivotal role, encouraging him to explore sound recording. Through this neighborly spark, the project grew into something much larger.

The contributors include:

  • Seann Medicina – vocals, guitars, and hand percussion

  • Kristina Mira – vocals on “En el cielo”, a beloved Spanish ceremony song

  • Whitney Toogood – vocals on the uplifting track “Hey-O”

  • Kevin Guerette – production and percussion on several tracks

  • Andrew Parmalee – recording engineer and studio host for three original songs

  • Paul Mitchell – recording engineer for “Hey-O” and “En el cielo”

The project is a testament to how community, friendship, and shared healing can birth something musically profound. There’s no ego here—just genuine connection, which shines through in every note.

Each song on As Within So Without holds its own space, but two tracks, in particular, resonate deeply:

A contemplative, earthy piece that acts as a gentle reminder to disconnect from the chaos of modern life and reconnect with nature and joy. With only hand percussion and layered vocals, it feels raw and grounded. It speaks directly to the heart without trying too hard—just as medicine music should.

Translated from the Shipibo language, this song expresses deep gratitude for healing. It is perhaps the EP’s most spiritual track, honoring the sacred wisdom of the Shipibo culture. The vocals are reverent and full of feeling, offering a bridge between cultures and an invitation to appreciate the unseen gifts we often overlook.

And then there’s “En el cielo,” a soulful cover chosen by Kristina Mira, originally popularized in ceremonial circles by Nessie Gomes. It ties the EP to the collective spiritual tradition that shaped Seann’s path and lends the project a sense of timelessness.

Recorded entirely in Ottawa, Ontario, the sessions were humble but inspired. Without a traditional kick drum, Seann and his team created a percussive heartbeat by pummeling a hockey puck into a pillow—a perfect metaphor for the EP itself: resourceful, unpolished, and real.

There’s no synthetic gloss here. Every sound, from the acoustic strumming to the layered vocals and hand percussion, feels intentional and alive. The textures are warm, the spaces in between the notes meaningful. It’s the kind of production that invites stillness rather than demanding attention.

While Seann Medicina’s music has primarily been heard in private healing ceremonies, this EP marks a turning point. Public performances are expected to begin in summer 2025, offering audiences a chance to experience these songs in the communal settings they were born from.
