Anton Commissaris – “Find Me a Girl”

There is something refreshing about a love song that knows how to have a little fun with romance. “Find Me a Girl” from Anton Commissaris takes a familiar subject—the search for that special someone—and gives it a playful swing, combining old-school songwriting charm with a distinctly contemporary perspective.

The song starts from a simple premise: the narrator knows what he is looking for. Rather than dwelling endlessly on loneliness or longing, he describes the woman he hopes to find, turning the search itself into something lighthearted and entertaining. Then comes the payoff. By the bridge, the search is over. He has found her, he loves her, and, perhaps most importantly, she loves him too.

That sense of resolution is part of what makes the song work. “Find Me a Girl” is romantic without becoming overly serious, and witty without losing its warmth. Commissaris understands that some of the best love songs do not need complicated stories. Sometimes the pleasure is simply in watching the right two people finally find each other.

Musically, the track draws from the language of classic jazz and swing, with the melodic sophistication and storytelling associated with the Great American Songbook. Yet it does not feel like an attempt to recreate another era. Commissaris brings his own voice to the tradition, treating swing as a living songwriting language rather than a museum piece.

That approach makes sense given his wider musical background. His work moves through jazz, soul, R&B, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban music, while his songwriting draws inspiration from figures such as Cole Porter, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Chucho Valdés and Stevie Wonder. There is also a strong melodic thread running back to Lennon and McCartney, while singers such as Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and Paul McCartney have shaped his appreciation for emotionally expressive vocals.

At the centre of it all, though, is storytelling. Commissaris writes about love, longing, resilience and self-discovery, often finding inspiration in ordinary experiences and the natural world. “Find Me a Girl” represents the lighter side of that songwriting instinct: a song about wanting something, searching for it, and getting lucky enough to discover that the feeling is mutual.

It is also another step in a remarkably active second chapter. After a career in Silicon Valley technology, Commissaris turned his attention toward the music he had always wanted to make. Since releasing his debut EP On a Bright Note in 2021, he has released nine EPs and more than 45 original songs.

“Find Me a Girl” fits neatly into that growing body of work. It is charming, melodic and deliberately uncomplicated—a reminder that romance can be joyful, funny and, occasionally, wonderfully straightforward.
