After years of releasing music independently under the moniker Big Ugly Dog while raising a family, Maine-based singer-songwriter and acoustic guitarist Rob Cunningham fulfilled a lifelong dream by recording under his own name. Released in February 2026, his six-track EP, Carrownisky Strand, represents a deeply personal collection of contemporary folk, Americana, and roots-rock. The project has earned wide recognition, including an International Singer-Songwriters Association (ISSA) Bronze Award for Male Album of the Year and multiple Global Music Awards.
The EP consists of five original compositions alongside a cover of Nick Lowe’s work. Throughout the project, Cunningham’s lead vocals, acoustic guitar, and harmonica form the primary narrative axis. His songwriting balances personal reflections on family, social justice, and matters of the heart, drawing inspiration from classic storytellers like John Prine and Steve Earle. The title track stands out as a focal point, using his ancestral home on the Irish coast to explore memory, heritage, and distance.
Recorded at Whole Music Studios in Byfield, Massachusetts, the session environment prioritized authentic, organic interaction over excessive digital editing. Producer and engineer E.J. Ouellette provides multi-instrumental support, creating rich layers alongside legendary drummer Dave Mattacks and the studio’s session team. This rhythmic and melodic backing gives Cunningham’s intimate arrangements room to breathe, framing his storytelling with acoustic warmth and steady precision.
