INTERVIEWER: Chung Ha, it’s great to have you with us. Let’s start at the beginning. You mentioned in a previous interview that you never imagined you’d be a soloist after I.O.I disbanded. How do you feel about that now?
Chung Ha: It’s still a bit surreal to me, to be honest. I never expected to be where I am today. Back when I.O.I went their separate ways, I thought my path might lead me back to dancing, not necessarily to a solo music career. But here I am, and I’ve realized that becoming a soloist and having the courage to pursue it has been one of my proudest achievements. It’s amazing to look back and see how far I’ve come.
INTERVIEWER: You took a significant break after your 2022 album Bare & Rare. What was that time like for you, and what led to your decision to return now?
Chung Ha: That break was actually very important for me. I spent a lot of time reflecting on everything I’ve done and figuring out what I really wanted moving forward. Up until then, I was always on the go – constantly releasing music, working non-stop. I needed a change of pace, a moment to breathe and think. I asked myself if I wanted to continue evolving as an artist, explore a new genre, or maybe even pursue something entirely different like acting or studying. Ultimately, I realized that music was where my heart is. So, I decided to give it one last shot and see where it could take me.
INTERVIEWER: You signed with Jay Park’s More Vision. What was it about the label that convinced you to join them?
Chung Ha: More Vision was very persistent, and they showed me their dedication from the start. What really attracted me was their vision – they had ambitious plans and a clear strategy for not just Korean promotions but also global touring and breaking into the US market. Their name says it all: More Vision. They had more ideas and dreams for my career than I had, which was incredibly exciting for me.
INTERVIEWER: Your new single ‘I’m Ready’ is a powerful anthem. How does this track represent your current state of mind?
Chung Ha: ‘I’m Ready’ really encapsulates how I’m feeling right now. The song is all about confidence and fearlessness, and that’s exactly where I am. After taking a break and rediscovering my passion for music, I’m ready to face new challenges and embrace the stage again. It feels like a personal anthem for this new chapter in my life, and I hope it can inspire others to feel the same way.
INTERVIEWER: The title track, ‘Eenie Meenie’, features a hip-hop rhythm and includes a rap verse by Hongjoong from ATEEZ. How did that collaboration come about, and what does it bring to the song?
Chung Ha: I’ve always been a fan of ATEEZ’s music – it’s empowering and full of energy. When it came time to find a collaborator for ‘Eenie Meenie’, I thought Hongjoong would be perfect. His dynamic style and the fearless energy he brings to his performances were exactly what the song needed. Plus, his role as the ‘captain’ in ATEEZ felt fitting, as I needed someone to help steer this new direction I’m exploring.
INTERVIEWER: You mentioned feeling that ‘Eenie Meenie’ was a bit of a departure for you at first. How did you come to terms with its new direction?
Chung Ha: It was definitely a bit daunting at first. The song felt very different from anything I’d done before, and I wasn’t sure if it was the right move. I had moments of doubt, but the more I listened to it, the more I realized how captivating it was. It stuck in my head and grew on me. Sometimes, the most surprising changes are the most rewarding, and I’m glad I embraced this new sound.
INTERVIEWER: Looking ahead, you’ve hinted at new music and a potential world tour. What can fans expect from you in the near future?
Chung Ha: I’m really excited about what’s coming next. We’re working on a new album, and I’m exploring a lot of different sounds and ideas. Some of the songs I premiered at festivals in Mexico City and Paris last year might be part of it, though we’re still figuring things out. I’m also planning my first solo concert and a world tour, which has been a long time coming. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and I just want to make it an unforgettable experience for everyone.
INTERVIEWER: You mentioned that you no longer focus on chart rankings but rather on personal fulfillment. How has your perspective on success changed?
Chung Ha: I used to be very focused on rankings and external validation, but I’ve come to realize that true success for me is about personal growth and happiness. Every project I work on is like a diary entry, reflecting my journey and evolution. I want each day to be different, to experience new things and feel fulfilled. If I can look back and see that I’ve had fun and made meaningful moments, then I consider it a success, regardless of where it lands on the charts.
INTERVIEWER: It sounds like you’re in a great place right now. Thanks for sharing your journey and your thoughts with us. We’re looking forward to seeing what you do next!
Chung Ha: Thank you so much. I’m excited for the future and grateful for the support. I can’t wait to share more with everyone soon.
